Watermelon, Cherry & Feta Salad

Watermelon, Cherry & Feta Salad

Is anyone else melting? Outside is my happy place, but man, it’s been tough enjoying the outdoors when I am reduced to a human puddle. It’s alright though, because now there is this amazingly simple, refreshing, and hydrating salad.

Watermelons are 92% water, I mean they are called ‘water’melons for a reason. There is nothing like icy cold cubes or slices of watermelon on a super hot day when even water doesn’t do the trick to cool you down. Plus, all the water in watermelons really does help you rehydrate. And it’s more fun/yummy to eat than water, and you are getting in fruit servings!

Feta + watermelon is a solid combo if you haven’t had it before or you are doubting the pair. Just like so many other amazing combinations, it is the fact that these two things are so different that makes them so good together. Watermelon = cool, light, sweet, refreshing. Feta = rich, salty, creamy. Opposites attract.

In terms of functional fuel, the watermelon and feta pairing is really pretty effective in helping you stay hydrated. Hydration is the balance of fluid and electrolytes in the body. So, here we have the water from the melon and the salt from the feta working together to replace the fluids and salt that you are losing through sweat on these hot days. Especially with exercise and training, hydration should be a priority this time of year. Brush up on your hydration knowledge and learn how much fluid you need here.

This salad is so easy, it really doesn’t even require a recipe. It is more of an idea for you to recreate with proportions you fancy of each ingredient, or make it your own! Have lots of herbs? Throw in some mint or cilantro too. Are there some peaches on your counter that are going to be overripe in an hour? Dice them up and mix them in! Only have a lime and not a lemon, no problem. Lime would be great here.

Enjoy this salad as a light, refreshing snack, as a fresh side to a meal, or make a big bowl to bring to a barbeque. I know I will be enjoying this salad and its spin-offs all summer long. Happy fueling!

Watermelon, Cherry & Feta Salad

Makes 4 Servings

¼ of a large watermelon, rind removed

1 cup ripe cherries, halved and pitted

¼ cup crumbled feta

couple fresh basil leaves, torn into pieces (or just super small leaves like here)

juice of 1 lemon

olive oil

Cut the melon into bite-sized chunks. Top or mix with the cherries, feta, and basil leaves. Dress with lemon juice and a drizzle of olive oil. That’s it!

Notes: You can prep this salad ahead of time, but I would suggest only assembling when you are ready to eat for the freshest flavors. This recipe is very easily multiplied as you may need.
